Bellew Sean McManus, 64, passed away on April 20, 2026 after a nine-month battle
with cancer. Born in New York on October 6, 1961. Bellew lived a life marked by
compassion, service, and deep commitment to family and justice.
Bellew was educated at St. Joan of Arc School, St. Francis Preparatory High School,
Georgetown University and Notre Dame Law School. He dedicated 31 years of service
to the New York State Division of Human Rights, retiring in March 2026. During his
tenure, he served an Executive Board member and Council Leader and was an active
member of the Hispanic Committee of the Public Employees Federation.
Professionally and personally, Bellew was deeply committed to standing up for the
rights of others. He lived by the philosophy, “there but for the grace of God go I,” and
will be remembered for his selflessness, warmth, and generous spirit. Friends fondly
recall his infectious smile and quick wit.
Bellew had a deep love of music, particularly Irish music, including Stiff Little Fingers,
Van Morrison and Hozier, as well as artists such as Bob Marley, and Bruce Springstein
and the E Street Band. An avid sports fan, he was devoted to the New York Mets,
Georgetown basketball, Notre Dame football and Drexel rowing. He was also a lifelong
student of politics.
Above all, Bellew was a devoted family man. He loved and steadfastly supported his
wife and children, who were the center of his life. He loved and supported them.
